Cashmere wool, simply known as cashmere is the fiber obtained from the Cashmere goat. Essentially, the undercoat of the goat that acts as the most perfect insulation under the extreme winters of the Mongolian highlands. There, the temperatures can go down to below 50 minus during the winter and up to 40 plus in the summer. Here only the strongest animals with the best genes and the best wool survive.
This is the Cashmere wool that is used in the wool production in Mongolia.
The Cashmere fibers are removed by the nomads in the spring between April and May after a long, hard Mongolian winter, using a manual comb-out process. It takes about one to one and half hours to comb out the wool from a goat. This wool gives nomads above 50 USD per kilo, making it very exclusive, with such a high quality. The average is about 400 grams of cashmere fiber per goat. As the Mongolian goat fiber is so long, this leads to a very high quality thread, which then leads to less wear marks. Internationally, there are a lot of varying qualities of cashmere wool, but the Mongolian cashmere fiber is top ranked in the world for its high quality and length of fiber, and thus achieves the highest price on the world market.
